Apparatus for modulating a pulse width inaccordance with the magnitude of an A.C. or D.C. voltage comprises an electrostrictiverelay 10 (Fig. 1) fed with an adjustable D.C. voltage from a source 20, and an adjustableA.C. voltage from a transformer 28, whereby the relay 10 closes its contacts 13 wheneverthe combined voltage exceeds a predetermined value, so that squared pulses appearacross a resistor 17 in a load circuit containing a battery 15, the pulses having the samefrequency as the A.C. derived from the transformer 28, and a pulse width determined bythe value of the combined A.C. and D.C. voltages.
