DD Boost for Symantec OpenStorage Software

The DD Boost for Symantec OpenStorage software is a licensed option that allows a Data Domain system to act as a an OpenStorage storage server for Symantec's NetBackup and Backup Exec products. The DD Boost for Symantec OpenStorage software includes a plug-in (referred to as the Data Domain OST plug-in) that runs on the supported NetBackup and Backup Exec media servers defined in the Compatibility Lists below.

If enabled on the Data Domain system, virtual synthetics are supported. A virtual synthetic full backup is a backup assembled from previous backups. The backups include one previous traditional full backup, subsequent differential backups, and a cumulative incremental backup.

The DD Boost version 2.5 plug-in’s communication with DD OS version 5.2 no longer uses the MOUNTD port. Instead, it only uses one NFS connection for each job. In addition, the hostname of the media server is sent to the Data Domain system for authentication instead of for DNS verification. Therefore, it is no longer necessary to add all media hosts to the Data Domain system’s /etc/hosts file.

Description

Enhanced plug-in error logging to the Data Domain system.

Fixed the issue in which a some Solaris plug-ins were being delivered without their sym-bols being stripped. Stripping symbols is done to save memory.

Fixed plug-in crash (NULL pointer dereference) with Backup Exec 2012 on Windows 2008 R2, if the connection to the Data Domain system were lost during an active backup job.

Added new functionality that improves how the plug-in handles retries and recovery.Fixed the issue in HP UX IA64 environments where backups with distributed segment pro-cessing enabled would intermittently crash.

Fixed the issue in which connection recovery bounced the connection twice, causing the associated job to fail.

Fixed the issue in which running NetBackup 6.5 on an AIX media server sharing a 10 GbE NIC with tcp_nodelayack enabled with 2 other LPARS led to an incorrectly restored data file due to problems with the socket read code.

Fixed the issue in which the ddboost mtrees operation could cause the Data Domain system to panic and restart.

Fixed the issue in which a Data Domain system could initiate a potentially infinite number of connection retries if a network issue prevented the initial connection to NFS.

Fixed the issue in which users received inappropriate RPC errors when attempting to use the version 2.4 or 2.5 DD Boost plug-in with DD OS 4.9 or earlier, rather than receiving an invalid argument/unsupported version error.

Added support for Mtree quotas in DD Boost storage units affecting these CLI operations: ddboost storage-unit create and ddboost show compressionAdded a new API call so that storage capacity information and statistics can be retrieved by any DD Boost-compliant backup application.

Fixed the issue with multiple Backup Exec Device & Media Service instances accessing the same file at the same time leading to a DD OS panic. This should not be a problem with Backup Exec 2010 R3 with all current hotfixes even in a Central Administration Server Option (CASO) configuration but the plug-in fix is recommended.

Fixed the issue in which multiple connection attempts needlessly delayed authentication and collection credentials.

Fixed an issue where the Backup Exec Device & Media Service monitoring multiple stor-age units would infrequently fault in libstspiDataDomain.dll due to thread safety problems.

Fixed the issue in which essential technical and business information files were not included in release distributions.

Fixed the issue in which a backup application could be granted inappropriately broad access to a Data Domain system.

Fixed the issue in which Data Domain systems with 64 Gigabytes of memory or less would incorrectly report zeroes for the actual stream counts.

Fixed the issue in which a Data Domain system experienced a panic upon receiving a non-file value for a path rather than issuing a more appropriate “flags and mode combination invalid” error code.

Fixed the issue in which the DD Boost plug-in could fail if an error code outside the expected range caused NULL pointer to be returned.

Known Issues and Workarounds

NetBackup 6.5.x and 7.x

•

When connected to Data Domain systems at DD OS 4.8 or greater, NetBackup will miscalculate the percent full of a logical storage unit based upon the data supplied by the plug-in. This may cause the logical storage unit to be marked down for exceeding the high-water mark. This is a known Symantec NetBackup issue. The Symantec Etrack is 2062645.

The recommended workaround is to temporarily disable high-water checking by increasing the high-water threshold to greater than 100%. Note that the Data Domain system will raise an alert in case the system is actually approaching full.

Due to the way that credentials are stored in NetBackup, the same Data Domain

system cannot be used for Open Storage and as an NDMP host unless care is taken to ensure (1) that any media server accessing the Data Domain system for NDMP is able to access it via Open Storage, and (2) that the NDMP and Open Storage credentials on the Data Domain system are identical. There is no workaround.

On catalog cleanup, multiple media servers will attempt to delete the same image. This causes performance degradation on the Data Domain system. The Symantec Etrack is 2284851. There is no workaround.

Backup Exec 2010 R2 or R3

The device concurrent operations count must be set properly (see DD Boost for Symantec OpenStorage Administration Guide) to avoid multiple failure scenarios.

Plug-in install or update failure

The NetBackup Remote Manager and Monitor Service (nbrmms) must be stopped. Even in this case, the install script may fail with an error indicating 'a plug-in already exists' as shown below. In this case, run /usr/sbin/slibclean to remove unused modules from memory.

Retry the install.sh after executing the following command:

Since the modules have now been unloaded from memory, the install.sh script should run without any issues. We have seen this issue only if a plug-in was installed before and is being replaced by another instance.
