Save Yourself

Long long ago, there were four friends named Mike, Jack, Sam and Frank. They belonged to the same village. Once they were invited to attend a friend’s marriage party in a distant village. So they decided to go to attend the marriage party together.

①On the day of the marriage started their journey early in the morning, so that they could cross the forest before darkness falls. ②While they were crossing the forest carefully, they could not enjoy its beauty because they were afraid of the wild animals. That’s why they wanted to cross the forest quickly.

By noon, they had crossed more than half the way. ③All of a sudden, Mike asked Jack, Sam and Frank to stop and said, \"There may be danger ahead as the area is known for its tigers. Let us check for the tigers first, then we will go on further.\" They all looked here and there. At this moment, Frank saw the tail of a tiger behind the bushes. He trembled with fear and cried, \"There is a tiger behind the bushes! Now, what do we do? How can we save our lives?\" Mike said, \"Do not be afraid of the tiger. Have faith in God. We should pray to God. He will protect us.\"

④Jack climbed up a big tree quickly and said to his friends loudly, \"Do not waste time in talking. Quickly, climb up a tree. God helps those who help themselves. Be quick. Save yourself.\" So Mike, Sam and Frank rushed to a nearby tree and climbed up. They all waited for the tiger to go. When the tiger went away, they got down from the tree. At last, they crossed the forest safely and reached the village to attend their friend’s marriage party.

How popular was Mini?

Every year, Mini’s classmates voted her as the favourite student because she was easy to get along with and a great company.

①One day the 10-year-old was asleep in the class and the teacher ordered her to stay back as punishment. Staying back meant doing something 'useful', like helping in the garden or library after school.

Now the school in which Mini studied had a rule. Once a month, you could change your punishment schedule with someone else. ②If you have something else to do the day you are punished, you can ask a friend to stand in for you. Of course, you had to stand in for her to be punished, but in that same month itself.

On that day a very dear aunt was visiting Mini on her way back to America. That afternoon was the only chance Mini had of seeing her for another five years.

Mini needed someone to stand in for her. That was a problem because it was the last day of the month. ③So anyone who helped her, would do so out of friendship's purpose alone. She asked Betty, her 'best' friend for help. \"Oh, no, Mini, I can't,\" Betty said. \"I have to teach my brother to finish his homework.”

\"Mike, will you stay back for me?\" Mini asked another friend who was playing basketball in the playground. \"To help the librarian? Why don’t you tell me earlier?I have to go to a relative's house with my father. Some other day perhaps,\" and with that Mike fled.

By now, Mini was beginning to doubt if even one of her friends would agree to stay. But she tried for several times again,no one agreed to help her.

So Mini had to stay back to help the librarian, Ms Miller. ④When Ms Miller saw her crying and knew the truth, she allowed Mini to go home to meet her aunt. \"Some popularity I have?\" Mini said to herself when she went home. \"I may have many friends, but in fact I have none.\"

A Carpenter’s Story

An old carpenter was ready to retire. He told his employer about his plans to leave the house building business and live a more free life with his wife. ①He would miss the pay, but he needed to retire. ②The employer was sorry to see his good worker go and asked if he could help him build just one more house. The carpenter said yes, but it was easy to see that his heart was not in his work. He built it very carelessly and used bad materials.

It was an unfortunate way to end his job. When the carpenter finished his work and the employer came to check the house, the employer handed the key to the carpenter. \"This is your house,\" he said, \"my gift to you.\" What a shock! What a shame! ③If he had only known he was building his own house, he would have done it all so differently. Now he had to live in the home he had built none too well.

So it is with us. We build our lives in a distracted way, reacting rather than acting, willing to put up less than the best. At important points we do not give the job our best effort. ④Then with a shock we look at the situation we have created and find that we are now living in the house we have built. If we find it earlier, we will do it differently.

If we had realized that we would have done it differently. Think of yourself as the carpenter. Think about your house. Each day you place a board, or build a wall. Build wisely. It is the only life you will ever build. Even if you live it for only one day more, you also should live kindly and with dignity.

Who could say it more clearly? Your life today is the result of your attitudes and choices in the past. Your life tomorrow will be the result of your attitudes and the choices you make today.

1. carpenter ['kɑ:pəntə] n. 木匠,木工 2. employer [im'plɔiə] n.

That boy never did housework, but he made dinner for his family today.

2. The employer was sorry to see his good worker go and asked if he could help him build just one more house.

be sorry to do很遗憾做某事。如:

3. If he had only known he was building his own house, he would have done it all so differently.

主句的谓语形式是would/ should/ might/ could+have done。如: If you had repaired your bike, you would not have broken your leg.

4. Then with a shock we look at the situation we have created and find that we are now living in the house we have built.

此句中含有两个定语从句,第一个从句we have created省略了引导词that,它限定situation; 第二个从句we have built,也省略了引导词that,限定house。如: We have found that cat my mother bought yesterday.

A Father's Love

Daddy just didn’t know how to show love. ①It was Mom who held the family together. He just went to work every day and came home. My mother would have a list of my bad behavior and my father would scold us about them.

②Once when I stole a candy, he made me take it back and tell the man I stole it and that I’d pay for it by doing something. But it was Mom who understood I was just a kid.

I broke my leg once and Mom held me in her arms all the way to the hospital.③ Dad pulled the car right up to the door of the emergency room and when they asked him to move it saying the space was reserved for emergency cars, he shouted, “What do you think this is? A tour bus?”

At my birthday parties, Dad was always busy blowing up balloons and setting up tables, it was Mom who carried the cake with the candles on it for me to blow out.

When I look through picture albums, people always ask, “What does your Dad took like?” “Who knows? He was always taking photos for everyone else. I must have a lot of pictures of Mom and me smiling together.” I remember when Mom told him to teach me how to ride a bicycle. I told him not to let it go, but he said it was time. I fell and Mom ran to pick me up, but he waved her off.④ I was so mad that I showed him, got right back on that bike and rode it myself. He didn’t even feel embarrassed and just smiled.

When I got married, it was Mom who cried. He left the room without a word. All my life he said, “Where are you going? What time are you coming home? No, you can not go.” Daddy just didn’t know how to show love, unless… Is it possible he showed it and didn’t recognize it ?

A Cat’s Thought

The Man was very sad. He knew that the Cat’s days were numbered. ①The doctor had said there wasn’t anything more that could be done, that he should take the Cat home and make him as comfortable as possible. The man put the Cat on his legs and saw him sadly. The Cat opened his eyes and looked up at the Man. Tears rolled down the Man’s eyes and landed on the Cat’s face.

\"Why do you cry, Man?\" the Cat asked. \"Because you can’t bear the thought of losing me? Because you think you can never forget me?\" The Man nodded \"yes\".

\"And where do you think I’ll be when I leave you?\" the Cat said. \"Close your eyes, Man,\" ②The Man gave

him a questioning look, but did as he was told. \"What color are my eyes and fur?\" the Cat asked. \"Your eyes are gold and your fur is a rich, warm brown,\" the Man replied.

\"And where is it that you most often see me?\" asked the Cat. \"I see you...on the kitchen window ...on my favorite chair...lying on my desk ...on the pillow next to my head at night.\" \"Then, ③whenever you wish to see me, all you must do is to close your eyes,\" said the Cat. ④\"Pick up that piece of string from the floor--there, my toy.’\" The Man opened his eyes, then picked up the string. \"Now take each end of the string in one hand,\" the Cat ordered. The Man did so.

\"The end in your left hand is my birth and the end in your right hand is my death. Now bring the two ends together,\" the Cat said. The Man did.

\"You have made a continuous circle,\" said the cat. \"Does any point along the string appear to be different, worse or better than any other part of the string?\" The Man looked at the string and then shook his head \"no\".

One day, not long after, there was a new Cat on his legs. She was a lovely black and white...very different from that dead cat and very much the same.

Let dream fly

When Larry Walters was a child, his dream was unusual: He wanted to fly. ①What was unusual was the way his dream came true. After finishing school, Larry joined the U.S. Air Force, but he couldn’t get flying practice because he couldn’t see clearly. However, he never gave up his dream.

Larry, aged 33, was not a pilot, but a driver in Los Angeles. One day, while sitting in his chair in his garden, Larry had a strange idea. ②As he watched weather ballons fly overhead, he decided to use weather balloons to fly. A few weeks later, Larry bought 42 one-meter diameter weather balloons. He tied them to a chair and filled them with helium. Then he sat down in the chair with some beer, sandwiches, and a BB gun. Larry’s plan was to fly about 10 meters above his backyard, enjoy a few hours in the air, and then shoot some balloons with his gun to get back down. But things did not go according to Larry’s plan.

③When his friends cut the rope, Larry, lifted by the 42 balloons and flew into the high sky quickly. He finally stayed at an altitude of 4,000 meters. Afraid to shoot some balloons, the balance of his “craft” would lose”. Larry sat, cold and frightened, in the sky with his beer and sandwiches for 14 hours.

Larry’s stay in the skies caused many planes to change their routes. Finally, Larry had to shoot a few balloons and slowly get back down, landing in power lines. Finally, he climbed down safely and was caught by waiting police.

④When asked by a reporter why he had done it, Larry answered, \"a man just can’t sit around.\" Larry achieved his dream, and set a record for a gas-filled balloon flight. But he had to hand in $1,500 for breaking air safety rules.

How to Stay Happy No Matter What Happens

Happiness is a choice:you can choose to be sad when everything is going well for you and you can choose to be happy even when nothing seems right. You need to make happiness a habit and not just an act. ①I believe that the following points will show you how to stay happy no matter what happens. Be Grateful

You ought to show appreciation for life. Let me give you a little exercise, next time you feel as if everything is working against you and there is nothing to be thankful for, pick up a pen and a piece of paper and make a list of things you should be thankful for. For example, I woke up this morning, I have food on my table, I have clothes to wear, the skies are beautiful ... ②By the time you finish this little exercise, I can assure you that you will feel better already. Be optimistic

Whenever you are feeling sad or upset, always remember that it’s short and that tomorrow will be better, tough times don’t last but tough people do. Develop a positive attitude, be optimistic.

Act as if you are happy

Smile always, even when you are feeling blue. ③When the body acts, emotions follow. A smile costs nothing but it creates much, it enriches those who receive it without impoverishing those who give. Learn to smile at all times, it won’t only make you happy, it will also win you happy friends. Stay Close to Friends

I was feeling very sad and upset at work one Friday morning, I didn’t know what to do so I called a friend, I shared my burden with her and we had a short talk. ④By the time I finished pouring out my heart to her, I already knew why I was not happy and what I had to do as well. Don’t be afraid to share your feelings with friends, it works.

If you want golds, dig them by yourself

There was once a farmer who had a fine apple orchard. He was very hardworking, and the farm always grew well under his care. But he knew that his three sons didn’t want to work the farm, and hoped to make money through adventure.

When the farmer was old, and felt that his time had come to die, he called the three sons to him and said,“My sons, there is a pot of gold hidden in the apple orchard. Dig for it, if you wish it.” The sons tried to get him to tell them in what part of the orchard the gold was hidden; but he would tell them nothing more. After the farmer was dead, the sons went to work to find the pot of gold; since they did not know where the hiding-place was, they agreed to begin in a line, at one end of the orchard, and to dig until one of them should find the money.

They dug until they had turned up the soil from one end of the orchard to the other, round the tree-roots and between them. But no pot of gold was to be found. It seemed as if someone must have stolen it, or as if the farmer had been wandering in his last time. The three sons were pretty disappointed to have all their work for nothing. The next apple season, the apple trees in the orchard had more fruit than they had ever given; when it was sold, it gave the sons a whole pot of gold.

And when they saw how much money had come from the orchard, they suddenly understood what the wise father had meant when he said, “There is gold hidden in the orchard. Dig for it, if you wish it.”

Life Is Like a Bank Account

①This story was about Mrs Jones, whose husband had passed away. The old lady was 82 years old. Although her life is hard, she was always nicely dressed every day.

This morning Mrs Jones was moving to the nursing home again. The nursing home was very busy. ②After hours of waiting, Mrs Jones still smiled sweetly when she was told that her room was ready. As usual, I took her to her room. On our way, I told her what her room was like.

Suddenly she said, “I love the room!”

“But Mrs Jones, you haven’t seen the room yet!”I was surprised at her reply.

She stopped and said, “③Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time.Whether I like my room or not doesn’t depend on how the furniture is placed. It depends on how I decide to think about the room. I have already decided to love the room before I actually see it.”

Then she continued, “I have a choice. I can spend the day in bed and think about how tiny my room is. Or I can just get out of bed and be thankful that I can still enjoy a new day. Each day is a gift. I’ll enjoy my life and all the happy memories that I have stored in my bank account before.”

Learn to believe yourself

I became a blind boy when I was four years old by falling off a box car in a freight yard and landing on my head. Now I am thirty-two. ①I can still remember how bright the sunshine is and what red color is. It would be wonderful to see again, but a calamity can do strange things to people.

②I often think I might not have come to love life as I do if I hadn’t been blind. I believe in life now. I am not so sure that I would have believed in it so deeply, otherwise. I don’t mean that I would prefer to go without my eyes. I simply mean that the loss of them made me appreciate the more what I had left.

Life, I believe, asks a lot of adjustments to reality. ③The more readily a person is able to make these adjustments, the more wonderful his own private world becomes. The adjustment is never easy. I was worried and afraid. But I was lucky. My parents and my teachers saw something in me —a potential to live, you might call it—which I didn’t see, and they made me want to fight it out with blindness.

D. teaches

The hardest lesson I had to learn was to believe in myself. If I hadn’t been able to do that, I would have become a chair rocker on the front porch for the rest of my life. But I am a real, positive person, I believe there is a special place where I can make myself fit.

All my life I have set a lot of goals and then tried to reach them, one at a time. I had to learn my limitations. ④It was no good to try for something I knew at the start was wildly out of reach because that only invited the failure. I would fail sometimes anyway but I often could make progress.

1. blind [blaind] adj.

3. calamity [kə'læməti] n.

1. I can still remember how bright the sunshine is and what red color is.

How green the mountain is and what clear water is.

2. I often think I might not have come to love life as I do if I hadn’t been blind.

I couldn’t have so wonderful life if I hadn’t been to the university.

3. The more readily a person is able to make these adjustments, the more wonderful his own private world becomes.

The more...,the more... 如: The more apple trees you plant, the more money you make.

4. It was no good to try for something I knew at the start was wildly out of reach because that only invited the failure.

I knew at the start在句中作定语限定something。如:

I can’t finish reading that book today because I have no time to read.

1. The harder you study, ______ grades you will get . A. good

B. well C. the better

D. the best

2. How long has the writer been blind?

2. For 28 years./ Since he was four years old.
