Note Taking

Note taking as an accommodation is available only to students who have documented disabilities and are registered with Queen’s Student Accessibility Services (QSAS).Note taking is approved for students with disabilityrelated functional limitations that make it difficult for them to access academic information presented in class.

There is a wide range of reasons why students may require note taking as an accommodation, including students with:

·hearing loss, who may have difficulty hearing the instructor while writing notes at the same time

·vision loss, who may have difficulty seeing information presented on overhead screens

·mental health conditions or attentionrelated disabilities, who may have

difficulty attending to orallypresented information while taking notes

·learning disabilities, who may have difficulty recording notes when information is presented orally

·physical disabilities, who may have painrelated difficulties

Accessibility advisers consider a student’s description of their need for note taking along with information contained in their disability documentation and the type of course in approving note taking as a formal accommodation.

Online Note Taking Portal

QSAS is in charge of the exchange of notes taken by student volunteer note takers and students registered with QSAS via our secure online note taking portal.

The pages in this section provide information for students with disabilities, volunteer note takers and instructors on requesting note taking, signing up to be a volunteer note taker and assisting QSAS in recruiting volunteer note takers.

(2020·惠州市高三第一次调研)When I was a boy, our extended, immigrant family would sometimes gather at my aunt’s tiny house over the summer. Relatives from all over the country would come to visit. The adults would crowd together in the living room to talk and catch up on each other’s lives. And the kids would be sent out into the front yard to play when dinner was slowly cooked for all of us.

Those were the days before video games, smartphones, and motorized toys, so we often ended up playing an old game. I remember one of those moments especially. As I was the youngest and smallest of all the kids there, I got caught first

and couldn’t catch anyone else. My brothers and cousins were all too fast for me, and I grew more and more frustrated. Finally my face fell first into the dirt. I got up with tears forming in my eyes. Then I saw one of my female cousins Susan standing there. She started to run but was going much slower than before. I easily caught up and seized her. Then she turned to me, smiled, and said, “I’m it! You’d better run!” I ran off laughing with glee while she turned and started to chase others.

Now I see how her act of kindness that day saved me from sadness and made my joy return. It didn’t matter that we hardly ever saw each other. I know we are family and she loves me.

In her wonderful book Box of Butterflies, Roma Downey writes, “We are all one, we all belong to each other, and we are one big, beautiful family.” Perhaps it is time we all started to treat each other that way. Perhaps it is time we shared our love, our kindness, our laughter, and our joy with everyone without fear. Perhaps it is time to finally and forever bring this world together in one big family reunion.

If you grew up in a household that had its fair share of bookshelves, it might say something positive about your personality when you’re all grownup.

This new study found that people who grew up in bookfilled homes have higher levels of reading, math, and technological skills. The researchers analyzed data featuring 160,000 adults aged 25 to 65 across 31 nations. All participants were asked how many books there were in their home when they were 16 years old. They chose from a series of alternatives ranging from “10 or less” to “more than 500”.

If a household held at least 80 books, then participants went on to display the average level of literacy (读写能力) and numeracy (计算能力).The level of literacy continued to increase in parallel to the number of books a household contained until the level didn’t increase from 350 books onwards. Furthermore, young teenagers who grew up around books were shown to have the same levels of literacy and numeracy as university graduates who had only grown up around a few books.

Literacy was clarified as “the ability to read effectively to participate in society and achieve personal goals”.Participants took tests that“captured a range of basics of advanced comprehension skills, from reading brief texts for a single piece of information to synthesizing (综合) information from complex texts”.Numeracy tests measured the “ability to use mathematical concepts in everyday life”, while ITrelated tests “assessed the ability to use digital technology to communicate with others, as well as to gather, analyze, and synthesize information”.

The results suggest those books made a longterm difference.“Growing up

(2020·合肥市高三调研)Tired of standing in line? Wait a bit longer, and you may never have to again. Everyone from Amazon to Silicon Valley startups is trying to eliminate lines in retail (零售) stores.

Amazon has opened 24 of its Amazon Go stores, which use cameras and artificial intelligence to see what you’ve taken off shelves and charge you as you walk out. Some startups are closely copying Amazon’s approach to using AIpowered cameras fixed in ceilings. But others are trying an entirely different way to skip the checkout: smart shopping carts. These companies have added cameras and sensors (传感器) to the carts, and are using AI to tell what you’ve placed in them. A builtin scale weighs items, in case you have to pay by the pound for an item. Customers pay by using a credit card, or through an online payment system. When customers exit the store, a green light on the shopping cart indicates that their orders are complete, and they’re charged.

The startups behind the smart shopping carts, including Caper and Veeve,

say it’s much easier to add technology to the shopping cart than to an entire store. Amazon Go stores rely on hundreds of cameras in the ceiling. The shelves also include sensors to tell when an item is removed. Ahmed Beshry, cofounder of Caper, believes the technology to run Amazon Go is too expensive to use in a large grocery store. Neither Caper nor Veeve has said how much their smart shopping carts will cost, making it difficult to compare the different formats. Shariq Siddiqui, CEO of Veeve, said he’s finding increased interest from retailers given Amazon’s steady expansion of Amazon Go since the first Amazon Go store opened in Seattle in 2018.“We’re always happy when Amazon is doing something,” Siddiqui said. “They force retailers to get out of their old school thinking.”

Each time a business uses artificial intelligence and cameras, it raises questions about customer privacy and the impact on jobs. Beshry notes that the cameras in his smart shopping cart point down into the cart, so only customers’ hands and part of their arms will be captured (拍摄) by cameras.

12.Which of the following best explains “eliminate” underlined in Paragraph 1?

A.Cross. B.Remove.

C.Extend. D.Break.

根据第一段前两句“Tired of standing in line? Wait a bit longer, and you may never have to again.”

13.What do we know about the smart shopping carts?

A.They are linked to the cameras fixed in the ceilings.

B.They can tell customers where to find what they want.

C.They flash the green light when the order is cancelled.

D.They are able to recognize purchases placed in them.

根据第二段第四句“These companies have added cameras and sensors (传感器) to the carts, and are using AI to tell what you’ve placed in them.”

14.What does Beshry think of the technology applied in Amazon Go stores?

A.It is far more expensive than their smart shopping carts.

B.It may increase the cost of running a large grocery store greatly.

C.It has attracted many more retailers than before.

D.It is likely to help retailers to think differently.

根据第三段第四句“Ahmed Beshry, cofounder of Caper, believes the technology to run Amazon Go is too expensive to use in a large grocery store.”

15.What is the best title for the text?

A.The New Technology Promotes Retail Sales

B.AIpowered Cameras Are Used in Retail Stores

C.Smart Shopping Carts Will Let You Skip the Line

D.Artificial Intelligence Affects the Future Job Market

Why Walking in Nature Makes You a Better Worker?

We’re busy at work, distracted by technology and often live in urban environments far from wild 16 average American, for example, spends about 90% of their life indoors. But what happens if we make time for an hour outside each day?

__17’ll have to go out for a walk, which is beneficial if most of your day involves sitting in front of a screen. Research shows short breaks can improve work enthusiasm, and a quick break in natural light will deliver a shot of vitamin D.

There are also a lot of mental benefits when you are in nature — you are happy and your brain can make sense of life.“When people are all out in nature, even in urban nature, people tend to have more positive emotion and energy than when they are 18__,” said Lisa Nisbet, associate professor at Canada’s Trent University.

The idea that nature is good for us has been gaining grounds since the 1980s. __19__. Afterwards, shinrinyoku, the Japanese concept, which is the practice of taking a short, leisurely visit to a forest for health benefits, followed that. Researchers of shinrinyoku have since found plenty of physical and mental benefits, while global studies suggest spending time in nature can, for example, restore our ability to focus, increase our creativity, and even help us live longer.

Of course, many of us live in cities with no ready access to forests or the

wilderness. __20__. Various studies have shown that green environments in cities have beneficial effects.

A.We also don’t get out much

B.But it doesn’t have to be a forest

C.People can get to a forest for a hike

D.In other words, people are happier in nature

E.There are some obvious benefits when being outside

F.Green and blue spaces are better than busy city streets

G.First came the theory that humans have a basic desire to be connected with nature

16.选A 根据空后一句“The average American, for example, spends about 90% of their life indoors.”

17.选E 本空是段首句,与下一段的首句“There are also a lot of mental benefits ...can make sense of life.”

根据语境并结合空前的“people tend to have more positive emotion and energy than when they are indoors”可推知,D项“换句话说,人们在大自然中更开心”与此处匹配。

19.选G 根据空后一句“Afterwards, shinrinyoku, the Japanese

concept ...followed that.”

B选项中的“it doesn’t have to be a forest”与空前一句中的“with no ready access to forests or the wilderness”相衔接,且与空后一句中的“green environments in cities have beneficial effects”相呼应,所以选B项。
