17. Researchers define self-control or self-discipline as“ability to control or change one’s inner responses”.___16___ However, some people think that as an immediate consequence of leading lives of constant self-control,they aren’t likely to gain a lot of pleasure from life.

___17___ To start,414 adults completed on online survey. In the survey, they rated the their self-control by indicating how much they agreed with 14 statements, such as“I indeed do certain things that are bad for me,if they are fun.”

In their study,205 adults were given smart phones and required to report their emotions at random moments throughout the week. ___18___ If so,they had to report how hard they tried to resist them, and whether they eventually ended up acting on them.

The researchers found that the more self-control people had,the more satisfied they were with their lives in the long run. ___19___ In fact, such people’s increased happiness to a large extent accounted for the increased life satisfaction.

These researchers also figured out that people high in self-control are simply less likely to find themselves in situations where that’s even an issue. They don’t waste time fighting inner battles over whether or not to eat a second piece of cake.___20___ And that,it would seem, makes them happier……even if occasionally a little bit sad.

16. C 17. B 18. D 19. E

20. A 【分析】

横线后一句“However, some people think that as an immediate

consequence of leading lives of constant self-control, they aren’t likely to gain a lot of pleasure from life.” 句中的however说明横线句的内容与本句内容相反,C项“It is generally believed that in the long run self-control can make people happier.”

B项“Researchers checked these general ideas through a survey and study.”

横线前一句“In their study, 205 adults were given smart phones and required to report their emotions at random moments throughout the week”说明,在研究中,205位成年人被要求在随机的时刻报告他们这周的情绪情况。本句内容还是与研究相关的内容,D项“Meanwhile, they were also asked to report whether they were experiencing any desires.”

横线前一句“The researchers found that the more self-control people had, the more satisfied they were with their lives in the long run.” E项“However, people with more self-control were also more likely to be happy in the short run.”

横线前一句“They don’t waste time fighting inner battles over whether or not to eat a second piece of cake”告诉我们自律的人不会浪费时间去考虑要不要再吃一块蛋糕。 A项“In a word, they are not bothered about such little desires.”

【点睛】本文小题1的答案是通过关联词however推理出来,句中的however说明横线句的内容与后句内容相反,C项正确。在完成七选五阅读时,我们可以从细节逻辑上判断——转折关系: 转折关系主要指英语行文中后句对前句构成逆转逻辑关系。如果空格前后两句话之间是逻辑上的逆转,则空格处很有可能是个转折逻辑的句子。表示转折关系的连接词有:However然而;nevertheless仍然,然而,不过;nonetheless尽管如此,依然,然而;still还;然而;though可是,不过,然而;

yet然而;in spite of不顾,不管;at any rate无论如何,至少;in any case无论如何,不管怎样;whoever无论是谁;whatever无论什么;on the contrary正相反;in contrast与此相反,相比之下;by contrast相反,相比之下;in comparison比较起来,比较地;by comparison相比之下;conversely相反(地);otherwise否则,除此以外;not…but…

18. I have had the privilege of meeting some very interesting people over the years. Some of these people

made a great impact on my life, my views and personal philosophy. Others I met had the opposite effect

because they represented attitudes, behavior and beliefs that were directly opposed to my views on life and my feelings about the value of all people.

One such person I met was a woman in her late seventies. She had been an active woman, raised a family and had engaged in helping others, and developed her own crafts to sell at selected craft shows throughout the year.

When I met her for the first time, I couldn’t believe that she was in her late seventies — I would have placed her age more in her early sixties. After speaking with her for a short period, it was only then that the conversation seemed to turn to age. And, it wasn’t a conversation about the frailty (脆弱) of age, or the aches and pains, or about pleasures lost.

The conversation, instead, focused on her zest for life and all the things that she was in the planning stages of doing. And, what she was planning to do wasn’t about going to a seniors group so she and her husband could go on a bus tour. What she was planning was an excursion (旅行) to Europe, unaccompanied by any tour operator or taken around the usual sights by a local guide.

She really impressed me a lot because of her zest for life; for an uncompromising view of the future not in the least affected by her age; for the undying faith in knowing that there was a great deal of life yet to be discovered and experienced and yearning for each new image, discussion, smell, cultural uniqueness or experience.

51. From the text we know_____________.

A. the woman had much sight-seeing around the world. B. the woman was willing to help others. C. the woman made great wealth by selling crafts. D. the woman talked a lot about her age.

52. The old woman impressed the author because ______________. A. she kept young in spite of her age B. she had experienced a lot in life

C. she never gave in to the aches and pains in life D. she had a positive outlook on life

53. What kind of tone does the author use to describe the woman? A. Doubtful. C. Concerning. C. Sympathetic. D. Appreciative.

54. The underlined word “zest” in the fourth paragraph probably means“_____________”. A. enthusiasm B. concept C. view D. satisfaction

On one particular day,1 was teaching in a very difficult classroom.1 was managing behavior all morning and by lunch time, I knew I needed coffee to even consider surviving the afternoon. So on my lunch break, I drove to a nearby plaza to get a cup of coffee.Upon returning to the car I realized l had locked my keys and my phone inside! I had about 15 minutes to get back to the school which was a good 4 or 5-minute drive away.I contemplated(思考)rushing back, but it being winter, I thought a nasty fall on ice would only make the situation much worse.

The manager returned only to tell me that the cab company had put him on hold and then the line got disconnected, and that he was now on hold again, but had not yet been able to request the cab yet My expression, I assume, began to resemble some combination of hopelessness and fear.

Without a thought, he grabbed his coat and offered to drive me to the school. Without hesitation, I followed him into his car and made it back into my classroom with 2 minutes to spare before the bell! Upon arriving at the school, l thanked this man endlessly. His calm behavior and kind nature made me think he was probably a wonderful manager to work for, and also a wonderful human being to have on this earth. This experience makes me realize that out of every seemingly hopeless situation, there is the opportunity for acts of kindness to transpire(发生)'which can have an unimaginable impact(影响) on those who receive them.
