Line of Fire火线
A worker is placed in a “line of fire” when he/she is the direct line of an impending hazard. When this occurs, we must quickly recognize the hazard and remove the person from the hazard.

Focusing on the worker, however, should not replace effective safety management systems. The most important step in eliminating line of fire exposures is to address the root cause of the exposure.
Several examples of workers being placed in a line of fire are listed below along with examples of solutions to eliminate the hazard.
An employee was using compressed air to clean under a
piece of equipment. The employee was wearing protective goggles. The dust from the clean-up activity, however, was being blown into a pedestrian walkway opposite from the employee.
When performing a task involving the use of compressed air, water, or hazardous chemicals, barricade any potential areas of exposure to persons who may be walking or working in the area.
An employee was using a pair of pliers to install a tie wrap
used to secure some low voltage wiring to an overhead pipe. The pipe was located above the employee’s head. During this
Environmental, Health and Safety activity, the pliers slipped off the tie wrap and struck the employee in the face.
The employee could have been removed from the line of fire through the use of a ladder. We should frequently evaluate non-routine tasks to ensure that the correct tools are readily available and used.
A forklift driver was unloading a piece of equipment from a
flatbed trailer. During this activity the forklift driver got off of the machine to check his fork placement. While checking the fork position, the unattended forklift rolled forward pinning the forklift driver between the forklift and trailer.
Employees should never be placed in a situation in which they are located between a working forklift and a fixed object. A parked forklift must have the brakes set, the forks lowered to the ground, and all controls neutralized. Unattended forklifts should also be turned off.
An operator was performing a routine task next to a pipe
containing steam. During this activity, some condensate and steam were released from the pipe resulting in a thermal burn to the employee’s leg.
The incident investigation revealed that similar near miss incidents had occurred previously. Do we treat near miss incidents as a warning sign of bad things to come?
The worker performing this task is protected from the “Line of Fire” through the use of long sleeves, gloves, and a face shield. Are workers at your site exposed to similar hazards?
